1930s Makeup

These videos have been going viral for the past couple of weeks, and seeing as I work at a Museum, any piece of history like this is going to especially intrigue me.

This makeup tutorial by British Pathe, entitled “Secrets of Make-up,” shows ladies from 1936 the proper technique to get a glamorous Hollywood look. The makeup artist uses geometry to apply the cosmetics, and demonstrates on three different face-shapes following the guidelines.

The artist quite literally shows us that application of makeup is a science — measuring distances between the forehead and nose, nose and cheek, lips, and so on, to determine the exact area of the face needs makeup.

Imagine taking a compass to your face every morning. Yes, perhaps your eyeliner would be impeccable, but would it be worth the extra time?
