Garage Sale
Every June, the Chicago neighborhood I grew up in has an amazing garage sale. This year I made a point of getting up super early (even though it’s a Saturday) and went walking up and down the alleys with my mom.
A lot of people turn their noses up a garage sales, thrift stores, and secondhand things in general, but old things always seem to be the best things. It takes a bit of patience and a little haggling, but I walked away with amazing designer items for a total less than $50. Among those purchases, I got a gorgeous 1940s mink fur coat and black Armani tank top (saving both for a future post), a gold cocktail ring and Vivienne Tam dress.
I couldn’t resist the opportunity to take a photo of at least some of my amazing finds. It was horribly sunny and bright out, so I’m regretting my lack of shades in these photos.
I paired my newly acquired Vivienne Tam dress and gold cocktail ring with a quilted leather Topshop jacket, F21 peep toe wedges, and a handmade Antique Brass Holster Hand Chain (an item from Rusted Revolution’s new 2012 jewelry line, soon on sale). My hair is in a top knot (the result of unwashed hair and laziness) but I think it suits the dress quite nicely.
I love this dress bcaus of its versatility — wear it with tights, ankle boots, and a parka for a chic winter look, or pair it with sandals and a denim vest for a deck party in the summer. The keyhole in the neckline is quite dangerous when I move, making me feel like just the right amount of sex kitten, while the long sleeves and modest midi hemline keep the dress sophisticated.
How would you style this dress?
Have a happy Saturday!
